A few years ago, I had the opportunity to work for a family that had a 5 yr. old child with a rare form of cancer. She was just beginning her chemo treatment and they needed someone to take over their household duties and care for their other children.

2 days before hearing about this family, I had been offered my old job back. A job that paid extremely well and had excellent benefits, and was 2 miles from my home. This family lived 35 miles away and I would have to commute on 2 lane city streets the whole way there resulting in a 45-60 minute drive one way.

Well God, I said, one of these is what you want me to do and one is the distraction. Please show me which one is where I am supposed to be. 2 weeks and many prayers, and fasting later I found myself in this family’s home doing whatever needed to be done.

The week I started to work for them their daughter Katie went septic. The Dr.’s didn’t have much hope and neither did the family. This caused me to lay on my face and really spend some serious time with God. My role as an intercessor became much clearer.

I wish I could say that I become much more spiritual right away. Before it was all over I actually had lots of questions for God and questions about what I believe. Why so much suffering for one so young? Not only her but the countless numbers of children in the hospital with her sufferering as well. I went through many ups and downs with that family in the 2.5 yrs. that I lived and worked with them. My faith and theirs was tested. I do know that I made the right decision to by being obedient to God. They were my assignment for that time. In the end I didn’t have all of the answers to my questions but my faith was strengthened. A child that no one had hope for is a living miracle today. She has inspired many and people who hadn’t been able to see God before now do because of her story. I am happy to say that today she is in remission and has been cancer free for 2.5 yrs.

While it hasn’t been easy and her family is still going through some struggles, I know that God is still in control. I will continue to believe.
